Nautical Term: Quarantine

Definition of Quarantine

Quarantine refers to the mandatory separation or restriction of intercourse between a person or vessel and others, due to the presence or risk of contagious diseases.

For instance, during a cholera outbreak in a port town, all incoming ships and their crews would be subjected to a 30-day quarantine. This would involve the ships being anchored outside the harbor, and the crew members being isolated onboard or in designated quarantine facilities. Such measures would help prevent the spread of cholera and ensure the safety and health of the local population.
