Nautical Term: Bell suction
Definition of Bell suction
Bell suction refers to the flared, open end of a cargo pipeline. This pipeline terminus is typically situated at very close tolerances to the bottom of a liquid cargo tank.
For instance, consider a large oil tanker transporting crude oil from the Middle East to Europe. The cargo pipeline leading from the oil tanker to the European refinery must be precisely located below the tanker’s cargo oil level. The bell suction of the cargo pipeline ensures that the pipeline remains submerged in the cargo oil, allowing for efficient and continuous transfer of liquid cargo from the tanker to the refinery.
