Definition of Rabbet

A rabbet is a specifically designed recess or offset in a structural component, such as a ship’s stem, intended to interface and connect securely with an adjoining part. For instance, in the context of a ship’s construction, the rabbet in the stem would serve to take and securely fasten the shell plating.
