Nautical Term: Reeve

Definition of Reeve

Reeving refers to the process of passing the end of a rope through a leading mechanism, such as a sheave or fair lead.

For instance, when hoisting a sail on a sailboat, the sailor would first reeve the sail halyard through the sheave on the mast, making it easier to hoist the sail.
