Nautical Term: RIO
Definition of RIO
ʻRadar Information Overlay’ (RIO) refers to a feature on some maritime radar systems. RIO enables the overlay of additional navigational data, such as Automatic Radiobeacons (AIS) and Waypoints, onto the radar display.
For instance, a mariner navigating through a busy harbor may rely on RIO to enhance their situational awareness. By having essential navigational data, such as AIS targets representing other vessels, and waypoints denoting intended course segments, overlaid directly onto the radar display, the mariner can quickly and easily assess the location, movement, and intended courses of other vessels in their vicinity, as well as monitor their own progress towards intended waypoints, all with a single glance at the radar display.
