Nautical Term: Salvage

Definition of Salvage

Salvage refers to the process of recovering a vessel or its cargo from danger, destruction, or total loss after an unexpected accident or disaster at sea.

For instance, consider a container ship that experiences a massive fire in the engine room. Due to the intense heat and smoke, the crew must abandon the ship. However, salvage experts can be called in to assess the situation and attempt to recover the vessel and its valuable cargo before they are destroyed by the elements or further damage from the ongoing accident or disaster.
