Nautical Term: Forging
Definition of Forging
Forging is the process of transforming a raw metal mass into a desired shape. This intricate procedure involves shaping the metal through various methods such as hammering, bending, or pressing while the metal is still hot.
For instance, imagine a blacksmith crafting a horseshoe. The blacksmith first heats the horseshoe blank in a forge. Once the metal is glowing hot, the blacksmith uses a hammer and anvil to shape the horseshoe blank into the final horseshoe shape. The blacksmith repeats this process for each horseshoe, ensuring that each horseshoe is perfectly crafted to fit the horse’s foot.
