Nautical Term: Tanker
Definition of Tanker
A tanker ship is a large watercraft specifically engineered to transport and carry various types of liquid cargo. This can range from common petroleum products such as oil and gasoline, to less conventional cargos like molasses, water, and vegetable oil.
For example, during a tropical storm, a large oil tanker may be asked to divert its course and assist in the transportation of large quantities of water to communities in need. In this instance, the tanker’s ability to efficiently transport large volumes of liquid cargo is crucial to the success of the relief effort.
