Definition of Shot

A ‘shot’ refers to a specific length of chain, typically measuring 15 fathoms or 90 feet in length. This measurement is commonly used when referring to the length of chain used in various anchoring systems.

For example, a sailor might say, We’ve anchored in 30 feet of water, so we’ve deployed 15 fathoms of chain, or 90 feet, to ensure a secure anchorhold.
