Definition of Sight edges

These edges are located on the outside of the shell, on the tops of decks, inner bottom plating, and on the opposite side from the stiffeners on bulkheads. For example, a navigator on a ship may use the sight edges to determine the ship’s heading and speed. By comparing the sight edges on different sides of the ship, the navigator can estimate the ship’s rate of turn and make any necessary corrections to maintain the desired course.
