The Safety Level Approach (SLA) refers to a proactive risk management strategy designed to maintain a predefined level of safety throughout the vessel’s operation. For instance, a cruise ship might implement the SLA by setting a safety level based on the number of passengers, the ship’s size and age, and the geographical location of the voyage. By following the SLA, the cruise ship can ensure a higher level of safety for its passengers and crew.
