Nautical Term: Spud
Definition of Spud
A ‘spud’ is a vertical steel or wooden post or pile, designed for anchoring a vessel in a body of water. The spud is inserted through a well in the hull of the vessel. Once lowered to the bottom of the waterway, the spud effectively anchors the vessel, providing stability and preventing unwanted drifting or movement.
For example, a small fishing boat may use a spud as an additional anchor, especially when anchoring in shallow water. The spud provides extra stability, preventing the boat from swinging or drifting due to wind or current.
