Nautical Term: GZ
Definition of GZ
The term GZ refers to the vertical distance between the center of gravity (CG) of a ship and the line of action (LAA) of the buoyancy force. Essentially, it is a measure of a ship’s stability and its ability to resist heeling moments. For instance, if a ship encounters a large heeling moment due to a sudden wave, its ability to resist this moment and maintain its stability would depend on its GZ value.
