Nautical Term: SSRS
Definition of SSRS
The ‘Ship Security Report System’ (SSRS) is a set of guidelines and procedures designed to enhance the security of a merchant vessel at sea. This system requires the master or designate to submit daily security reports, as well as any other reports pertaining to security incidents or threats, to the Coast Guard National Vessel Movement Center via secure electronic means. Failure to comply with the SSRS can result in penalties and consequences for the vessel and its crew.
Example: During a transatlantic voyage, the cargo ship ‘Sea Explorer’ encountered a suspicious fishing vessel in its vicinity. In accordance with the Ship Security Report System (SSRS), the master of the ‘Sea Explorer’ reported this incident to the Coast Guard National Vessel Movement Center via secure electronic means. The report included details about the size, type, and position of both vessels, as well as a description of the suspicious behavior observed from the fishing vessel. By promptly reporting this incident through the SSRS, the master of the ‘Sea Explorer’ helped ensure the safety and security of his vessel and crew.
