Nautical Term: Stabiliser(s)

Definition of Stabiliser(s)

Stabilizers refer to extended, hydraulically-actuated fins that decrease roll amplitude by performing oscillatory actions. This results in alternating lift vectors that are phased to counteract roll.

For instance, a large cargo ship experiences significant roll due to the weight and size of its cargo. In such cases, hydraulically-activated stabilizers can be extended to reduce the roll amplitude and provide greater stability to the ship.
