Definition of Flagstaff
A flagstaff, also known as a flagpole, is a vertical pole, typically positioned at the stern of a ship. The flagstaff serves as the structure upon which the ensign, or national flag, is hoisted to signify the presence and identity of the vessel.
For example, The S.S. Mariana sailed gracefully into the harbor, its ensign proudly unfurled atop the flagstaff at the stern of the ship.
