Nautical Term: Stern ramp

Definition of Stern ramp

A stern ramp is a hinged, transom-mounted platform located at the rear of a Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) vessel. This ramp is designed to facilitate the loading and unloading of vehicles onto and from the vessel.

For instance, during the loading process of a Ro-Ro vessel, the stern ramp is lowered and vehicles are driven up the ramp onto the deck of the vessel. Similarly, during the unloading process, vehicles are driven down the ramp from the vessel’s deck and onto the dock or quay.
