A louver is a small opening designed to allow the passage of air for the purpose of ventilation. Louvers may be partially or completely closed by the operation of overlapping shutters.
For instance, imagine a sailor on a boat during a hot summer day. The sailor notices that the cabin is becoming stuffy due to the lack of ventilation. In order to solve this problem, the sailor opens the louvers on the cabin windows, allowing the cool breeze to flow inside and ventilate the cabin.
