Definition of Bollard

A bollard is a strong vertical post or pillar, typically made of steel or concrete, used onshore for mooring ships or securing ropes. For instance, when a cargo ship arrives at a pier, long ropes are thrown from the ship to the pier, and these ropes are then secured to the bollards on the pier.
