Nautical Term: Reaming
Definition of Reaming
Reaming is the process of expanding the diameter of a hole through the use of a cylindrical tool with slightly tapered and tapered cutting edges running along its sides.
For example, during ship repairs, a deck plate may need to be removed for access to the ship’s interior. If the hole left behind by the removed deck plate is not large enough for the necessary repairs or installations, the hole must be reamed to the proper size.
