Nautical Term: Tholes
Definition of Tholes
Tholes refer to the pins or holes located in the unwale, or the outer side of a boat. These tholes serve as attachment points for carlocs, which are hooks used to secure ropes or lines to the boat.
For instance, when a sailor needs to secure a line to the boat, they can use a carloc attached to a thole in the unwale. This attachment point provides a secure connection for the line, ensuring the boat’s stability.
