Tonnage openings refer to specific openings or gaps found in the bulkheads of a ship’s shelter deck. These openings are deliberately left for the purpose of reducing the ship’s tonnage rating, which can lead to significant economic savings for the ship’s owner or operator.
For example, when a ship is being constructed or refitted, the shipbuilder or designer may intentionally leave certain tonnage openings in the shelter deck bulkheads.
