Nautical Term: Bollard pull

Definition of Bollard pull

Bollard pull is the maximum static pulling force a tugboat can apply to a stationary object, typically measured in kilonewtons or pounds.

For instance, during a ship-handling operation, a tugboat with a reported bollard pull of 65 tons (589 kilonewtons) applies its maximum pulling force to the vessel’s mooring lines, enabling the tug to effectively maneuver the larger vessel in a confined area.
