Nautical Term: Oiltight bulkhead
Definition of Oiltight bulkhead
An Oiltight bulkhead is a structurally reinforced partition designed to prevent the flow of oil under pressure from one compartment to another. The riveting must be more closely spaced than in watertight work, and special care must be taken with the calking.
For example, on a ship with multiple oil storage tanks, an oiltight bulkhead might be used to separate the forward and aft oil storage compartments. By ensuring that the bulkhead is oiltight, any oil leak in one compartment would be prevented from spreading to the other compartment, minimizing the risk of oil spills and other potential environmental and safety hazards.
