Nautical Term: Waterline

Definition of Waterline

The waterline is the line marked on the side of a vessel at the water’s edge. This line serves as a reference for determining the proper trim of the ship. For instance, if a captain notices that the waterline on one side of the ship appears higher than on the other side, he may adjust the cargo or ballast on that side to bring the waterline back to an even keel.
