A watertight compartment is a designated space within a ship, constructed with materials and techniques that ensure the space remains free from the ingress or egress of water.
For instance, during a storm at sea, the crew may need to close all watertight hatches and doors to prevent seawater from entering the ship’s cargo holds. In doing so, the crew ensures the safety and structural integrity of the ship, as well as the preservation of its cargo.
