Nautical Term: Handybilly

Definition of Handybilly

A Handybilly is a compact and portable watch tackle, specifically designed for the convenience of sailors and mariners. It comprises a small block and tackle system, that can be quickly and easily stowed away when not in use.

For example, in a single paragraph, a sailor might say, During the course of our voyage, we encountered several squalls and rough weather. In order to keep our sails properly trimmed and set, I took out our handybilly tackle from the locker. This compact and portable watch tackle system, that I affectionately call our handybilly, proved to be an invaluable tool during those challenging conditions.
