Nautical Term: TPA

Definition of TPA

A Third Party Auditor (TPA) is an independent external entity, contracted by an organization or individual, to evaluate and assess the quality, performance, or compliance of a specific process or system.

For instance, a shipping company may engage a TPA to conduct an annual audit of its Safety Management System, as required by the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. The TPA’s report would assess the company’s adherence to the ISM Code’s safety management requirements.
