Nautical Term: Thwart

Definition of Thwart

The seats arranged transversely, or athwartships, in a boat that is equipped with oarsmen, serve as the seating area for these rowers.

For example, in a regatta race, the oarsmen in a racing shell sit on the thwart seats as they pull in unison, propelling the shell forward in the water.
