Nautical Term: Bitter end

Definition of Bitter end

The term bitter end refers to the inboard end of a vessel’s anchor chain. This is the end of the chain that is made fast in the chain locker.

For example, during a routine anchoring procedure, the captain orders the crew to secure the anchor chain at the bitter end. This ensures that the chain is properly secured and that the vessel remains safely anchored in the desired location.
