Nautical Term: Standing part

Definition of Standing part

The term ‘standing part’ refers to the segment of a line or rope that is secured, typically with a cleat or other fastening device. For instance, when setting a sail on a sailboat, the sailor may first attach the sail to the mast and boom using a series of ropes and pulleys known as a standing rigging. Once the sail is properly set, the sailor will then secure the loose ends of the ropes that make up the standing rigging to the appropriate cleats or other fastening devices. This process of securing the standing rigging is known as ‘standing part’ the ropes or lines.
