Nautical Term: Boxing the compass
Definition of Boxing the compass
Boxing the compass refers to the act of systematically naming each point of the compass. This procedure is followed in a specific order, usually starting from the bow or the port side, and proceeding in a clockwise direction around the compass.
For example, if a sailor is about to set sail, he would first box the compass to ensure that he is fully aware of the direction and the location of all the important points of the compass.
Once he has boxed the compass, he can then proceed to set the sails and steer the course according to the directions indicated on the compass.
