Nautical Term: Carlines (carlings)

Definition of Carlines (carlings)

A short transverse beam, usually running fore and aft between or under the main transverse deck beams. These beams, also known as headers when they support the ends of interrupted deck beams, are typically shorter than the main deck beams.

For example, During the storm, several transverse deck beams were damaged, causing the deck to sink in certain areas. The ship’s carlines, or transverse beams, were strong enough to support the weight of the deck and the cargo above it, preventing the ship from collapsing completely.
