Nautical Term: OPRC

Definition of OPRC

Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response, and Cooperation, often referred to as OPRC, is a comprehensive international regulatory framework designed to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and cooperate in the event of oil pollution from ships.

For example, a tanker experiences an equipment failure that results in an oil spill. In this situation, the OPRC framework would trigger a response from various parties, including the tanker company, the port authorities, and local environmental organizations. The OPRC framework would provide guidance on the roles and responsibilities of each party, as well as the procedures for containing and cleaning up the oil spill.
