Nautical Term: Clip
Definition of Clip
A clip is a temporary angle bar, typically ranging from 4 inches to 6 inches, which is welded to floors, plates, webs, and other structural members. The clip functions as a holdfast, pulling objects up close during fitting processes. Additionally, short lengths of angle bar are referred to as clips and are used to attach and connect various members of a ship’s structure.
For example, during the construction of a ship, the plates that make up the hull must be precisely aligned and fitted together. To ensure this alignment during the fitting process, temporary angle bars, or clips, are welded to the plates to function as holdfasts. Once the plates are properly aligned and fitted together, the temporary clips can be removed.
