Nautical Term: VHF

Definition of VHF

Very High Frequency (VHF) refers to a band of radio frequencies ranging from approximately 30 to 300 megahertz. VHF radio waves have short wavelengths, allowing them to effectively penetrate atmospheric conditions and cover relatively short distances.

For instance, mariners frequently utilize VHF marine radios to communicate with one another, as well as with coastal stations and marine traffic control centers. A simple exchange between two VHF-equipped vessels might go as follows:

Vessel A: Vessel B, this is Vessel A. We are approaching each other on a reciprocal course. Do you read me, Vessel B?

Vessel B: Vessel A, loud and clear. We have you on our radar and will maintain a safe distance throughout the passing situation. Wish us fair winds and following seas, Vessel A.

Vessel A: Roger that, Vessel B. Wishing you fair winds and following seas as well. Safe journey, Vessel B.
