Nautical Term: Deep tanks
Definition of Deep tanks
Deep tanks refer to compartments situated at either or both ends of a ship’s engine and boiler space. These tanks are different from the ordinary hold compartments and are strengthened to carry water ballast. The usual depth of these deep tanks runs from the tank top up to or above the lower deck. For instance, a ship might load water ballast into its deep tanks before setting sail to improve its stability and trim.
