Nautical Term: Drop strake

Definition of Drop strake

A drop strake is a horizontal plank or structural member found in the hull of some traditional boats, especially those with narrow hulls. These stripes are typically discontinued near the bow or stern, creating a drop or step effect.

For instance, in the construction of a traditional Dory boat, the builder may install drop strikes near the bow and stern to help prevent the boat from battering against the waves and bashing into the dock.
