Nautical Term: Face plate
Definition of Face plate
A face plate is a narrow, rigid plate that is welded along the edge of any web frame or stiffener in a nautical context. For instance, a large ship’s hull might have numerous web frames that provide additional strength to the hull. Each web frame might have a face plate welded along its edges to add rigidity and prevent deformation under the extreme loads experienced by a ship at sea.
