Nautical Term: Bilge pump
Definition of Bilge pump
A bilge pump is a device specifically designed to remove accumulated water, known as bilge water, from the bottom of a boat or ship.
For instance, while sailing on rough waters, seawater frequently enters the boat through the scuppers or through hull damage. When the boat is rocking or listing, the bilge water may not drain easily or may accumulate faster than it can be removed manually. In such situations, a bilge pump is an essential piece of equipment that helps keep the boat afloat and safe for the crew.
