1. To go adrift at sea means for a vessel to become detached from its moorings or anchoring point, thus drifting aimlessly in the water.

Example: During a violent storm, the small fishing boat next to the lighthouse keeper’s vessel went adrift, forcing the lighthouse keeper to attempt a dangerous rescue, navigating through the chaos of the storm and the adrift boats.
