Nautical Term: Gross tons

Definition of Gross tons

Gross tons is the measure of the internal volume of a vessel, calculated using the rule of convertibility which states that 100 cubic feet equals one ton. Therefore, the total internal volume of a ship in cubic feet can be converted into gross tons.

For example, The majestic ocean liner ‘Queen Mary 2’ has a gross tonnage of 60,638 tons. With its 1,022 feet long hull and a beam of 128.6 feet, it offers the highest level of luxury and comfort at sea.
