Nautical Term: Heave short

Definition of Heave short

Heaving short refers to the process of pulling a vessel’s anchor chain in, until the ship is riding close to its anchor. In other words, the vessel is secured in place with minimal swaying.

For instance, during heavy weather conditions, a sailor might need to heave short to prevent their vessel from dragging its anchor and drifting into dangerous waters.
