Nautical Term: Hold fast
Definition of Hold fast
The term ‘Hold Fast’ refers to a device, typically a rope or chain, used to secure an object or a vessel in place. The device is meant to keep the object or the vessel from moving or shifting, even in rough waters or adverse conditions.
For instance, imagine a fisherman on a small boat, trying to secure his catch in the boat. He might use a rope or a chain, known as a ‘dog’ or a ‘brace’, to attach the catch to the boat’s side or to a cleat. By using this device to ‘hold fast’ the catch in place, the fisherman can prevent the catch from moving around or shifting in the boat, even in rough seas or choppy waters.
