Nautical Term: MMSI

Definition of MMSI

Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is a unique number assigned to Maritime Mobile Service (MMS) equipment, such as Very High Frequency (VHF) or High Frequency (HF) radios. This number allows for the unambiguous identification of ships at sea or in port, enhancing safety and communication within the maritime community.

For instance, during a search and rescue mission, the Coast Guard communicates with various ships in the area to coordinate efforts and identify potential hazards. In such situations, the unique MMSI number assigned to each ship’s communication equipment enables the Coast Guard to quickly and accurately identify and communicate with each ship, enhancing safety, efficiency, and overall mission success.
