Nautical Term: Rips

Definition of Rips

Rips refer to agitated or disturbed conditions on the surface of a body of water. This disturbance can be caused by conflicting currents or by winds.

For instance, if a strong northerly wind is blowing across a body of water with a southerly current, then the resulting rip conditions can be quite dangerous for small boats and swimmers.
