Nautical Term: Scrieve board
Definition of Scrieve board
A Scrieve board is a significant portion of flooring in the mold loft, which is where the lines of a ship’s body are cut using a knife. This flooring is essential in the production of molds for the frames, beams, floor plates, and other components of a ship.
For example, during the construction of a new sailing vessel, the mold loft crew begins the process of creating a mold for the keel. To do this, they first prepare the Scrieve board by cleaning and smoothing the surface. They then mark out the dimensions of the keel mold on the Scrieve board, using the lines cut with the knife as their guide. Once the mold has been created, the Scrieve board is discarded and the process starts all over again for the next component of the ship to be molded.
