Nautical Term: Sheer plan

Definition of Sheer plan

A detailed and precise vertical longitudinal midship section drawing of a vessel, which is often referred to as a ‘sheer plan’. This drawing exhibits the plan, elevation, and end view of the midship section. Various lines are projected on this drawing to represent different aspects of the vessel’s shape. For example, the waterline, buttock and bow lines, mainbreadth lines, top-breadth lines, and top side sheer lines are all essential components of the sheer plan.

For example, if a shipbuilder was designing a new ship and wanted to ensure that the midship section was properly proportioned, they would consult the sheer plan. By carefully examining the various lines on the drawing, the shipbuilder could determine the exact location of the waterline, the shape and position of the buttocks and bow, and the overall breadth and shape of the midship section. This information would then be used by the shipbuilder to create the actual midship section of the new ship.
