Definition of Stem the tide

:Stemming the tide or the sea refers to turning the bow of a vessel towards the current or waves. This action is taken to overcome adverse circumstances and bring the ship back under control. For instance, if a sailing ship encounters a strong current that threatens to push the ship off course, the captain may order the helmsman to stem the tide by turning the bow of the ship directly into the current.
