Nautical Term: Cofferdam

Definition of Cofferdam

A cofferdam refers to a small, enclosed space created between two bulkheads. This space is left intentionally as an air space. The primary function of a cofferdam is to protect the inner bulkhead from external hazards such as heat, fire, or collision.

For instance, a large cargo ship is transporting volatile chemicals. To minimize the risk of a chemical spill or fire, the ship’s engineers install a cofferdam in the ship’s cargo hold. This enclosed space protects the inner bulkhead of the cargo hold from any potential damage caused by the volatile chemicals being transported.
